MIC PICKUP PATTERNS | 3/30/18

What are the different pickup patterns mentioned in the video?  What are each of them different from each other?  Why would these be needed? There are four different types of polar patterns.  The omni directional mic picks up the sound from 360 degrees all around, but the frequency response is best from the front of the mic.  Cardioid mic picks up in a heart shape pattern.  Hypercardioid mic is less sensitive of sounds coming from the side.  Figure 8 or bidirectional mic picks up sound equally from the front and back but almost nothing from the sides.

WRAPPING CABLES | 3/29/18

Why are A/V cables wrapped over/under and power cables wrapped over/over?  Why is this an important skill for a beginning filmmaker? The only cables that should be wrapped in the over over technique are power cables. Every other cable that you'll come across should be wrapped with the over and under technique. Tension can build up on certain ends of the cable and end up damaging the cable.

FOLEY SFX | 3/28/18

What are three essential things that this article mentions to keep in mind?  Why might each of these be important for video production? One thing that everyone should always look out for is having the all the footage needed. Always get several takes for foley, from different sides. You don't have to worry entirely about matching the action on screen, because that can be fixed during post-production.

IRON MAN WITHOUT MUSIC | 3/27/18

Without music, how does the scene feel to you?  Why?  What aspects seem missing?  How do you think having music change this scene? To me, the ambush scene seems more intense and realistic without music. Obviously it's already dramatic because it's a violent and deadly scene, but it feels very realistic when there's no music. When there IS music, the scene feels more dramatic, as in having more adrenaline, but it just doesn't feel as realistic as before. I prefer the scene without music, but the hostage scene is better with music, because there's no action taking place, and the music brings the intensity to the scene.

SFX VS. FINAL MIX | 3/26/18

Use what you've learned about sound in the keynotes and readings.  Describe 3 things that you notice about the before and after sound effects mix vs. the final mix.  How are they different?  How would you describe each of the differences? Three things that I noticed about the before and after sound effects mix and final mix is that that the effects mixes are very distorted. Music is usually finalized in the final mix. Also, ambient sound is removed from both mixes. Lastly, the final mix includes every small detail to sound, such as footsteps and hand motions, also the sound effects of the environment.

ET WITHOUT MUSIC | 3/23/18

What happens to this scene when the music is removed?  How does it affect the viewer's experience? When the music from the flying bikes scene from E.T. is removed, it removes the harmony of the scene. The event that takes place is till amazing, but without the music, it doesn't feel heartwarming and beautiful. During, you're just watching it, and your mind is wandering around, but with beautiful music, you don't want it to end.

SOUND DESIGN | 3/22/18

What are three interesting things that you learned from this video?  How could you begin to start thinking about sound design in future video projects? Some things that were shown in this video is how you can combine sounds to create a unique sound. Other techniques for the sounds that were used included reversing the audio, or changing the filter to make it sound different. Sounds were used from everyday items, such as a hard drive, a dentist drill, a horn, and a timer. This is exactly what Ben Burt did for Star Wars, he created unique  sounds using things that we'd never imagine using.

FOLEY ARTISTS | 3/21/18

What is the foley artists' role in crafting sound effects?  Explain in detail three different things that you learned in this video and how they effect the final film. Foley is the art of creating sound for picture during post production. Foley artists use a variety of tools and props in order to get the sounds that they need. The foley artists collaborate with the sound mixers all day. They are frequently given updates on what is need for the shots. To synchronize the sound better, they use a vertical line that moves across the screen, guiding them on when to get the sound right.

SILENT FILM STATUS | 3/20/18

What is the status of your Silent Film?  What was successful?  What were some challenges?  What did you feel were the biggest flaws of the final product? The status of my Silent Film is that it's completed. Personally, I would say that it's successful. The final results are good. One of the challenges included improvising with the change of the setting. I'd say that the biggest flaw in the final product was the costume for our character. We couldn't replicate the costume 100%, but we were still able to get the most out of it.

CATEGORIES OF SOUND | 3/19/18

What are each of the different categories of sound that are explained?  In detail, explain the role of each of these categories of sound in film and how they enhance the story. Sound in film is are made up of three different categories: the human voice, sound effects, and music. Dialogue expresses to tell the story and expresses feelings and motivations of the character. Sound effects are used to bring realism into the film, and can be used for the mood, or sound effects. Music, such as background, is used to add emotion and rhythm, as well as 'linking' the music with specific parts of the story such as characters.

DIAGETIC VS. NON DIEGETIC SOUND | 3/16/18

What is the difference between diegetic and non diegetic sound?  What is an example of each that you can think of from a film? Diagetic sound is when the source is visible or implied in film. Such as dialogue, original sound from an object, and live music. Non Diagetic sound is any sound with the source not being present or implied. This includes an original score, commentary, narration, and sound effects.

MONO VS. STEREO SOUND | 3/15/18

What is the difference between stereo and mono recordings?  What are 2 things that you found interesting in this article?  Why? There are many differences between monophonic and stereophonic sound. Mono sound is less expensive than stereo sound, which is more expensive. Mono sound is easy to record, while stereo sound requires knowledge and professional equipment to record. Mono sound has only 1 channel while stereo sound has two or more. Lastly, mono sound can be used for more services, such as for hearing aids, and mobile communication.

THE HISTORY OF MUSICALS | 3/14/18

How did the musical first develop in hollywood?  Why do you think it play such an important role in the history of filmmaking?  Why do you think there has been such a revival of the musical in pop culture in the 21st century?

THE ARTIST | 3/13/18

Why do you think this film was so successful when it was released in 2011?  Why do you think this film won the best picture oscar for that year considering that sound has been around in since the 1930's? My thoughts on why this film was successful in 2011 was because of the story between an era of silent actors and talkies. The reason as to why I think this film won the Academy Award for Best Picture is because the film payed homage to the silent film era. Also, of course, for being unique for its time, for it being the only film to do something different, such as being silent.

SILENT AFTER SOUND | 3/12/18

According to this article, why did hollywood switch over to "talkies" so fast?  Why was 1928 such a pivotal year for silent cinema? On October 6, 1927, The Jazz Singer  was released. The film only had little talking and singing, people craved it. The switchover began in late 1927, and was completed by 1929, but the majority was revolutionized in 1928. That year, silent and sound films shared the big screen.

THE SOUND OF STAR WARS | 3/9/18

What was the effect of Star Wars on the movie industry?  How did it affect the audience at this time?  What were the long term historical trends that Star Wars set into motion after this? There are many reasons on how Star Wars effected the film industry, but one huge way that it affected the industry was with sound. Before Star Wars was released in 1977, there were only very few theaters that had Dolby surround sound. Star Wars was the first to use bass.

HOLLYWOOD VS. TV | 3/8/18

Why was Hollywood threatened by television?  What where three key reasons it became a threat? Hollywood was threatened by television because a large proportion of people preferred to stay at home to watch TV, rather than going to a movie palace. One reason it became a threat was suburb homes being far away from movie palaces. The second reason was distributors and movie theaters being put in jeopardy by The Federal Communications Commission. The third reason was the pressure that Hollywood was receiving about blacklists.

THE JAZZ SINGER | 3/6/18

What were some technological issues that came up when it was first being implemented?  What was significance of "The Jazz Singer" in film sound history? The film adaption of "The Jazz Singer," was a success, but it encountered many technical issues. The Vitaphone process was extremely difficult to project.

8 MILESTONES OF RECORDING | 3/5/18

How do you think these technological advances affected filmmaking?  Which 3 of these advances do you think are the most important to video and film?  Why?  These technological advances affected filmmaking, because sound and music is 50% of the entertainment in film. The three advances that I think are the most important are of course, the invention of the phonograph, because it was the beginning of sound. The other is the gramophone/disk records, because they were, and still are, extremely popular.

QUESTIONS ABOUT EARLY SOUND | 3/1/18

Question #1: What was the very first film that had sound? Question #2: Who discovered sound, and how?

BIT RATES | 3/1/18

How would you describe the differences between the bit rates?  Why do each of them sound different from each other? The differences between the bit rates appear to have quality changes as it goes down. The smaller the bit rate, the more muffled the audio sounds. At first, I didn't see any differences with the first three bit rates, but after that, I began to notice the obvious change in audio.
