According to this article, why did hollywood switch over to "talkies" so fast?  Why was 1928 such a pivotal year for silent cinema?

On October 6, 1927, The Jazz Singer was released. The film only had little talking and singing, people craved it. The switchover began in late 1927, and was completed by 1929, but the majority was revolutionized in 1928. That year, silent and sound films shared the big screen.
