LETTER TO YOURSELF | 5/25/18

Look back at your experience over the last two years here at Film/Video Production.  Reflect on what you've learned, accomplished, the friends you've made and compose a letter to yourself on the first day of class in the beginning class.  Imagine that this letter couple be delivered to yourself on that day and he/she could read it. What advice would you give your past self? Would you tell them they are going to have a great experience? What would you warn them about? Try to wright a thoughtful reflection to yourself on this last day of class. You will be submitting it as credit to Jupiter. Hello Robert Rubio from August 14, 2017. On that day, you started class here at the Silicon Valley Career Technical Education. That's a mouthful, so we abbreviate it to to SVCTE. Anyways, I'm writing this to you to give you some advice about things I learned and experienced throughout the entire school year.  First off, I want to tell you, congrats on completing the course. Severa...

THE MOST VALUABLE EXPERIENCE | 5/24/18

If you had to pick three things that you found the most valuable from this class experience, what would they be?  What do you feel overall that this course has helped you prepare for? One of the three things that I found most valuable in this class was the hands-on experience with the cameras, especially the Sony FS-5's, which I loved using. The second most valuable was meeting everyone that was in the class, because I've gotten along with everyone, and they can be potential connections in the future.  The third and last most valuable thing from this class experience was having a passionate instructor who cared about his teaching, and did his best to teach us everything he can with the limited time that we had.

BEST UNIT | 5/23/18

What unit did you enjoy the most?  Why?  What are three things that you learned from the unit?  What are two things that you'd like to know more about?  How could this unit be improved?  Please give detailed input.  The unit that I enjoyed the most from this class has to be the Principals of Compositions. This was my favorite because we talked about all of my favorite lists of shots, including establishing shots, medium shots, medium close up shots, and close up shots. As well as angles. And I really care a lot about those two things in movies and tv shows, and it was great to see everyone in the class learn about them.

END OF SEMESTER GOALS | 5/22/18

Look back at your goals for the Fall and Spring Semester blog posts.  Were you able to achieve your goals?  Why or why not?  What could you have done differently?  Looking back at them, what could you have done to focus more on your goals in the course? Looking back at my goals, I was able to achieve one of them. I'm ending the year with a good grade and a good reputation. There was one other goal that I set for myself that I haven't achieved yet, but I'm still working on it. That one goal was to create an amazing short film. The reason why I haven't been able to achieve it yet is because I don't have the time and resources to do so. I have to dedicate all of my time on it with filming, but I can't because of school. That's why I'm going to spend the entire summer working on it.

DOCUMENTARY REFLECTION | 5/21/18

Now that you are finished with your documentary, reflect on what you have learned.  Answer the following questions in a well thought out paragraph. 1.  What have you learned in the documentary assignment?  List three different things that you have learned and what you learned. I didn't really learn anything new from this project. The same obstacles that we encountered were the same as from past assignments. 2.  What has this assignment taught you about video production? This project didn't teach me anything new. We could've done better if we had more time, considering the fact that we were assigned this project with insufficient amount of time. 3.  Was this assignment a good final project of the year?  Why or why not?  What did it teach you to improve you production skills? I'd say that this was a good project to end the year, but it would've been better if we were given more time to complete it. 4.  What mistakes did you make on the project? ...

B-ROLL IS YOUR A-ROLL | 5/18/18

What is Anthony's take on B-roll?  How is it different from others?  What is his secret tip for "bedroom B-roll?" Anthonys take on B-Roll is that it is being undervalued and depicted as a lower priority. The reason he says that is because it should also be known as A-Roll. It should be known as A-Roll, as it is the ACTION of the story. It shows the "character" revealing him/herself. Without it, you just have a Medium close up shot of people talking, which can eventually become boring. A-Roll is only telling the story, but B-Roll is actually SHOWING the story. Together, they both "complete the picture."

SHOOTING OUTDOORS | 5/17/18

What are 3 considerations you must keep in mind when shooting outdoors?  How would you use a reflector?  Why? You want to keep the reflector to the side, or under. The silver side of the reflector is so long that it'll . It's best to have the reflector almost in front of the camera.

DOCUMENTARY MISTAKES | 5/16/18

In your own words, which of these three are the most important?  Why?  If there were one more mistake that could be added to this list, what do you think it would be? There are many mistakes that one can make in their documentary. Not asking a question or choosing a theme is one of them. Choosing a worthy subject is very important, because not everyone fits into any role, even for a documentary. Using poor techniques to create events is also bad, and it shouldn't be winged either and just settle for whatever the results are. Using bad music is a horrible mistake to make. Music makes up about 50% of the entertainment and really brings the story to life. Choosing the wrong type of music will just feel very unatural and is poorly executed. The worst thing that one can possibly do for a documentary is film without a vision. If you don't have an idea of how you want the documentary to be, and decide to just record whatever you can get is not a good idea.

DOCUMENTARY TREATMENTS | 5/14/18

What are 3 key things that this article tells the viewer to keep in mind?  Why are they important? Some of the key things that one has to keep in mind is to most important, and obviously, tell a good story. another thing that is important to keep in mind is aim for a personal perspective, and go in depth with the storytelling. The most successful documentaries are the ones that have interesting characters trying to get or do something, well placed exposition, as well as tension and conflict. The films ending is your last word and has a big influence on the films final impact.

SHOOTING B-ROLL

What is B-Roll?  Why is it important for a project?  What are 3 things to keep in mind when you're shooting B-roll? B-Roll is supplemental footage that provides greater flexibility when editing video. It's the cutaway from an interview or news report to help with the story. Three things to keep in mind are the angles. You want to make the documentary look GOOD. Second is movement to give it a cinematic feel. Third is repetition. You never want to show the same thing over and over again.

NANOOK OF THE NORTH | 5/10/18

What are 2 things that the filmmaker did that are controversial?  Why were they?  Do you think the film was "authentic" after reading this article?  Why are why not?  Why is this film so famous? The film "Nanook of the North," became mostly controversial because of the real actions taken place by the cast and crew. There were two parts in the film where the cast killed a walrus with a harpoon on camera and drag the body along with them. There was another scene in the film where they kill a seal, who was the substitute of a bear for an attack. The film is not authentic due to the staged scenes such as the attacks. Another reason that the film is famous for is the authentic survival skill-set showcased by Nanook.

WHAT IS A DOCUMENTARY? | 5/9/18

What do you think a documentary film is?  Why are they interesting and important?  Please list 3 different reasons in detail and your justification for each. From my perspective, a documentary is a nonfictional film that shows the journey of something or something. It can be about the life and struggles of a celebrity. It can also be about a person with a goal who works and journeys too make it a reality. Sometimes it can be used for education and/or awareness about a popular topic. They are interesting and important because they're real. It's not based on a true story, because it IS a true story.

STORYTELLING UNIT WRAPUP | 5/8/18

What are 3 things that you've learned in the storytelling unit?  What are 2 things that you'd like to learn more about?  What is one thing you're still unsure about?  Why?  Please be specific and use vocabulary you've learned in the unit so far. There really wasn't a lot to learn from the storytelling unit since we only reviewed the beginning of the keynote. However, that doesn't really mean that we didn't learn anything at all. There were two things that I learned about, one of the them was the Character Tree. I really like that process because it really goes in-depth with the character that you're creating. It's a great way to bring the character to life. The other thing I learned about was the 7 types of conflict: Person vs. self, society, technology, nature, supernatural, fate/gods. Aside from learning new things, there were a few other things that we went over, such as plot: the "chain of events" of the story, and theme: the deeper me...

IRA'S ADVICE 5/7/18

How does Ira's advice relate to what you are going through in the class so far?  What are the key points that he mentions in the video?  How could they be applied to you?  What part of his advise seems helpful? Ira's advice relates to what we're going through in this class through the quality of our work. For most people, they start off creating videos, but they normally and usually won't be good at first, because those people are beginners. Just because your work is not good, that doesn't mean you should quit, you just have to keep trying. Your work might not be good, but your taste, the thing that got you into the "game," You have to put in the work, more importantly, the effort. And as your experience in this field increases, you learn and the quality of your work will becoming better as well.

SAMURAI FILMS | 5/4/18

How did Kurosawa influence George Lucas?  What parts of the samurai film did Lucas incorporate into Star Wars?  What is the most interesting thing that you learned in this video? One day, John Milius, a screenwriter, takes George Lucas to a screening of Seven Samurai, and Lucas instantly fell in love. The parts that were incorporated into the Star Wars saga include the name "Jedi" from "Jedai". He based Darth Vader and Stormtroopers after the antagonist and army. Most notably, he based the entire plot of the original 1977 Star Wars film off of Hidden Fortress, which is about two peasants who help a mentor and a princess from escaping an army.

CHARACTER ARCHETYPES | 5/3/18

Which archetype seems easiest to write?  Which do you think seems the most difficult?  Why?  What archetype do you understand the least?  Why?  What kind of hero's do you like telling stories about? I think the archetype that seems the easiest to write would have to be

7 BASIC PLOTS | 5/1/18

Pick two of these plot types that most interest you and write about them.  Why does each of these plot types interest you?  What makes them seem more interesting than the other ones?  Which two of the plot lines out of the seven would you like to use for a future video project?  Why? The Seven Basic Plots: Why We Tell Stories  was published in 2004 and written by Christopher Booker. The seven plots mentioned in the book are overcoming the monster, rags to riches, the quest, voyage and return, comedy, tragedy, and rebirth. If I had to choose two of them that are my favorite, I would have to choose the quest and tragedy. Why did I pick those two? I picked the quest because I grew up and have grown to admire various films that involve a quest. I love The Lord of The Rings trilogy, which revolves around a quest entirely. I grew up loving the Indiana Jones franchise for their adventurous quests across the globe, and because Indy himself is awesome. I love the quest ...
