LOUIS LE PRINCE 1/30/18

Who was Louis Le Prince?  What was his contribution to cinema?  After reading about him, what surprises you about reading this article? Louis Le Prince is considered to be the father of cinematography, who actually captured the first moving image before Thomas Edison. What I found interesting was the rest f his life story. He was scheduled to have a public performance on his technology, but he was mysteriously disappeared.

EARLTY FILM SCAVENGER HUNT 1/29/18

Why do you like this early silent film?  What is so interesting about it?  What are two common things that you noticed about the films you saw while searching for your video on youtube? Two common things that I noticed while searching for videos on YouTube is that the majority of them are between the 1920's and 1940's. Also, the short films total run time average around 10 minutes. I haven't watched any early silent films, at least not ones that I can remember. The one that I watched in class is Frankenstein (1910), and I found it quite interesting, mostly because I'm fascinated by the story of Frankenstein, and it's interesting see how every film brings the monster to the screen. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/HZ-OrfJHHro" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

MUYBRIDGE 01/25/18

What were Muybridge's contributions to motion pictures?  What breakthroughs did he make?  Why are they significant?  What part of the story did you find the most interesting?  Why? Eadweard Muyridge contributed with his movement photographs broken down frame by frame. He was also responsible for the invention of the Zoopraxiscope, a device to project moving images. The part of the of the story I found the most interesting was the murder he committed after he found out that his wife was having an affair with another man, who he shot dead.

CHRONOGRAPHY | 1/24/18

After reading this article and viewing the images that Marey captured, write a reflection on what you think Marey's motion studies contributed to the development of the motion picture.  What makes his work so interesting? Etienne-Jules Marey shot his photos using a gun, which had a revolving cylinder with photographic plates, capable of shooting 12 frames a second. The invention of his photographic gun influenced the motion picture camera, which would become capable of shooting film at 24 frames a second.

8 INNOVATIONS IN PHOTOGRAPHY | 1/23/18

Why do you think we wouldn't have filmmaking without the invention of photography?  Pick three of these innovations on this list and explain their historical importance and why you think it led to the invention of motion pictures. We wouldn't have filmmaking without the invention of photography because film rolls were possibly conceived by the methods used to develop pictures. Some of the inventions by photography that have historical importance are most notably the flexible film roll, photo chemistry, and daguerreotype, and calotype.

THE PHANTASMAGORIA | 1/22/18

What was the Phantasmagoria?  After reading this article, write a reflection on what elements of the Phantasmagoria became adopted into the development of movies. Phantasmagoria was the early spectacle of horror and mysticism where illusions of the resurrected dead both entertained & terrified crowds in the late 18th & early 19th century.

EARLY HUMANS & ANIMATED ART | 1/19/18

What role does lighting play in the caves?  How might these painting have been used by primitive man?  What are the two techniques that the early artists used to paint on the walls of the cave?  Why do you think they painted with these images? The brightness and the location and the location of the lights altered how the paintings would have been viewed. The two techniques that were used by early artists was juxtaposition of successive images. The second technique is superimposition, when variations of an image pile on top of one another to have a sense of motion.

THE TOP 10 PSA'S | 1/18/18

Pick one that interests you then embed it into your blog.  What makes this PSA so engaging?  Why does it stand out to you? The PSA that I found to stand out for me from all the others is the Anti-Drug PSA "I learned it by watching you," because it's a strong message towards parents, telling them that parents can also be a bad influence on children. Also, I was surprised when the kid stated that he learned from watching his own father.

THE FAIRNESS DOCTORINE | 1/17/18

Considering when the FCC finally scrapped it, (2011) how has this affected our national broadcast media and the national discourse?  Do you think the fairness doctrine should stay dead or be brought back?  Why? Ever since the Fairness Doctrine was removed, several media outlets have grown since. Now, there's cable TV, thousands and thousands of radio stations, as well as the internet discussing many issues around the world. I think the Fairness should stay scrapped, because ever since it was removed, many media outlets have risen to bring out issues to discuss. Also, Obama himself says the doctrine should stay removed, and I believe in him.

THE CRASH TEST DUMMIES | 1/16/18

What was the creators approach to seat belt safety in these ads that was so different from previous efforts?  What was the effect of the crash test dummy PSA's on society? The creators decided to make a PSA that addressed the issue with a sense of humor, rather than a traditional, shocking PSA. This decision turned out to be a great idea, and proved to be successful. The campaign was an instant success, and made the crash test dummies, Larry and Vince, pop culture stars. The campaign earned over $300 million, and seat belt usage rose from 21% to 67% in a decade.

THE AD COUNCIL | 1/12/18

What does the Ad Council do?  What is its mission?  Do you recognize any of their campaigns growing up?  Which ones?  Why do you feel they were effective? The Ad Council is a producer of public service advertising. The mission of the Ad Council is to identify public issues, and making actions to make a difference in society. The only campaign that I'm familiar with is Smokey Bear, who talks about forest fires. I didn't watch the ads growing up, but I'm familiar with it. I find this ad very effective because people recognize the character, and the character has a unique name.

HISTORY OF THE PSA | 1/11/18

Where did public service announcements begin?  What was their main purpose?  How have they evolved throughout the decades? Public service announcements were introduced during World War II, when radio broadcasters and advertising agencies bean offer skills and facilities for the war. Their main purpose was to promote programs, activities, or services of federal, state, or local governments.

INTRO TO THE PSA | 1/10/18

How is a public service announcement different from a commercial?  Why are they not seen as often compared to in the past? Public Service Announcements are not paid advertising, while Commercials however, are. They're typically aired after midnight and before 6AM, or are aired to fill in remaining commercial time. You don't see them as often anymore because they aren't forced for broadcast, and also, instead of airing a Public Service Announcement, a promotion for the TV station is aired instead (self-promotion).

SPRING SEMESTER GOALS | 01/09/18

If you'll remember, at the beginning of the fall semester we blogged about your goals.  Revisit those goals in your first entry of the Spring Semester. Look back at your goals that you set in the fall, did you achieve them?  Why or why not?  How can you make steps or corrections to achieve these goals?  Where will you need to look to gather help or resources? Back in the fall semester, I set a goal to have a good grade and reputation, which I achieved. My second goal was to become an expert with Adobe Premiere. I've learned a lot about it, but still have more to learn. My last goal was to make a short film that I'll always be proud of, which I'm currently still working on. I'll be finished with my short film by the end of the month, and my goal is to make another short film before the Spring semester ends.
