GENRE IN THE MOVIES | 4/30/18
What did you learn about genre and film from this video? Why is it important to a film?
Genres weren't used in film until 1910. Genres have influenced three facets of film: production, distribution, and consumption (viewership). Genres provide production decisions such as casting. Distributors can predict the audience viewership based on the genre of a film, making it easier to know which types of films will be successful and should be green lighted. Basically, for the studio, it saves time and money. For distributors, it provides an easily marketable film to the audience. For audiences, it eases the decision making process when selecting a film to watch. For culture, genres provide us with rituals as old as society.
